Coleen Tabor joins Emprise Bank

Emprise Bank of Wichita announced that it has hired Coleen Tabor, currently an executive at Spirit AeroSystems Inc., as its new executive vice president of human resources. Manhattan Resources handled the retained executive search for Emprise Bank.

“We are very happy that Coleen Tabor accepted the opportunity at Emprise. Her talent will be a tremendous asset to the Emprise organization,” said Chris Schoettelkotte, President and CEO of Manhattan Resources.

Honoree of WBJ’s 2018 Leaders in Diversity, Coleen Tabor is Well-Suited for New Role

Tabor will begin her work at Emprise later this month. Most noteworthy, her new role will have her leading HR and training groups with a focus on talent development for the bank.

She has spent the past 12 years at Spirit (NYSE: SPR), most recently as director of talent and diversity. Consequently, Tabor is among the honorees of the WBJ’s 2018 Leaders in Diversity awards in relation to that work.

Emprise Bank chairman and CEO Matt Michaelis said the addition of Tabor rounds out the bank’s leadership team. For that reason, Michaelis says that her new position will leverage her proven skills to drive growth.

Leading Development of People Adds to Bank’s Assets

“She has seen a breadth and depth of skills, systems, and experiences that will benefit us greatly,” Michaelis says.

And most importantly, he said, it means the opportunity for commensurate growth in the organization’s most important resource.

“Our people are our biggest asset. Hence, continuing to provide them with meaningful opportunities for development is key to our culture and future success,” Michaelis says.

Emprise Banks Has Aligned Vision and Commitment to Growth

Tabor is excited to join the leadership team that’s been built at Emprise. Furthermore, she is especially happy with the Emprise aligned vision and commitment to growth.

“That’s really what drew me (to the opportunity),” she said. In the end, “you don’t get a lot of chances to join a new team and enable a space for growth with a focus on people.”

In her role helping the institution attract, develop and retain top talent, Tabor supports the focus on employees. As a result, this growth-fueling focus on people will ensure that Emprise comes out on top in Wichita’s competitive environment for talent, she said.

“We want to be that employer brand of choice,” she said.

The second ranks 250 executive search firms that place executives in positions with at least $100,000 in annual pay.

To begin the process, Statista consulted with trade organizations and company databases to find 4,000 recruiters in two categories. Then, thousands of recruiters, professionals, and HR managers then took an online survey. Each person surveyed recommended up to 10 recruiting firms (excluding their own) with the end result of 20,000 recommendations. In conclusion, the companies with the most recommendations ranked highest and resulted in the top 250.

Manhattan Resources Named an Oil & Gas Awards Recruitment Agency Finalist for 2018

By | Awards, Business, News
search agency finalist

Search Agency Finalist for the 2018 Oil & Gas Awards Recruitment Agency of the Year, Manhattan Resources is a retained executive search and advisory services firm headquartered in Downtown Houston.

Manhattan Resources has been named a search agency finalist for the 2018 Oil & Gas Awards Recruitment Agency of the Year in Texas.

The Oil & Gas Awards Recruitment Agency of the Year recognizes that “in a hugely competitive marketplace, requiring skilled talent, efficient search firms and recruiters enable clients to focus on other business critical matters; safe in the knowledge a suitable pool of talent is coming through this channel.”

Houston Search Agency Finalist is Well Known for Retained Executive Search within the Oil & Gas Industry

Manhattan Resources has created its success in the Oil & Gas Industry through a focus on its mission to help its clients achieve their corporate objectives by building high-performance teams.  The company brings years of expertise and a time-tested retained search process to find talent with the perfect combination of skills, experience, and cultural background to fit each strategic role.

“Texas is a large and extremely competitive market when it comes to retained executive search,” said CEO Chris Schoettelkotte. “We are honored to be named a finalist for this award in a market and industry that we have proudly served for almost 20 years.”

Manhattan Resources drives value throughout the search process, spending time with its new clients in their environment and meeting with their leadership team, to ensure thorough technical and cultural understanding. “A strategic hire must be evaluated concerning the team in which it will operate,” said Schoettelkotte. “Just as great sports teams are built by sourcing players with complementary skills, so are great corporate leadership teams.”

Nuanced Skills to Ensure Cultural Fit are Uniquely used by this Search Agency Finalist to Assess Potential

Manhattan Resources works upfront to understand and define nuanced skills that the right candidate needs to enhance team relationships, and examines historical expectations and less clearly defined aspects of the business that may be impacted by or intersect with that role. The team then conducts extensive research to target individuals with the right experience to match the role, and the interpersonal skills and preferences to fit well within the company’s culture.

“This dedication to finding the right professional for the technical and cultural needs of the client, at the right stage of the professional’s career, is how we can provide our extended placement guarantee of a full year for strategic placements, and provide candidates that often have extensive ‘runway’ for future opportunities within the organization,” Schoettelkotte added. “Demand for our services increases not only when a position is difficult to fill with qualified talent, but perhaps counter-intuitively also when the labor pool increases, as companies hire us to proactively target the talent they need for their organizations.”

A Range of Specialty Technical Leaders at Manhattan Resources Span Functions in Oil & Gas and Supply Chain

Manhattan Resources helps its oil and gas clients source executive leadership as well as functional heads and specialty technical leaders across engineering, finance, accounting, sales, human resources, operations, quality, supply chain and strategic planning.

To help the Oil & Gas Awards judges make their decision, they explored a variety of criteria including but not limited to:

  • Relevance to the demands of the region’s leading firms.
  • Excellence in the quality and efficiency of services offered.
  • Examples of talent scouting and employee matching, while showing demonstrable value to the client.
  • Tailored energy-relevant expertise and understanding of client needs and job roles.
  • Outstanding corporate citizenship including details of CSR initiatives.

Santa Visited Rucker Elementary

Samantha-Anne Horwitch of Manhattan Resources and Michael Clinton of Blizzard & Nabers hang out with Santa and Mrs. Claus and the fourth graders at Rucker.

Santa visited Rucker Elementary children, along with Mrs. Claus, thanks to the Adopt-an-Angel program. Samantha-Anne Horwitch of Manhattan Resources is one of four chairpersons for Houston’s Adopt-an-Angel Program. Sponsored annually by the Houston Young Lawyer’s Foundation (HYLF) in partnership with Houston Young Lawyer’s Association (HYLA) and local law firms, attorneys, and businesses, Adopt-an-Angel brings holiday magic to Houston-area children through its annual gift-giving program.

Before Santa visited Rucker Elementary, he also attended children at other schools and private charities. With so many families suffering from the impact of Hurricane Harvey, this year’s Adopt-an-Angel program was more important than ever. Local firms and business partners sponsored individual children and families by purchasing holiday gifts and other necessities. As a result, the program brought Christmas to 2,500 children in the Houston area from 10 different schools and charities. Due to the generosity of its patrons, Adopt-an-Angel was able to add another charitable group this year. It sponsored additional schools for general needs, including sporting equipment and uniforms.

Santa Visited Rucker Elementary to Make Christmas a Reality for Children Who Might Not Otherwise Have It

The Adopt-an-Angel chairpersons are Kristen Bates, The Strong Firm, P.C.; Sherry Hill, Law Office of Sherry E. Hill, PLLC; Samantha-Anne Horwitch, Manhattan Resources; and Michael Clinton, Blizzard & Nabers. The program collects wish lists from economically disadvantaged students in Houston and matches each one with a member of the legal community. The person shops for gifts using the wish list and then returns them to the committee during the last week of November. The children receive their packages before Christmas.

“I had the pleasure of attending the Christmas party we hosted when Santa visited Rucker Elementary school children, where we adopted the third, fourth and fifth graders as well as the special needs classrooms,” said Horwitch. “During the delivery, each child is given a bag of gifts from Santa and gets the opportunity to take a photo with him and thank Santa in person! It is a wonderful thing to see the faces of those children light up when they see Santa and receive their gifts.”

The Adopt-An-Angel Committee organizes the program and coordinates the efforts of more than 1,000 volunteers from 60 local law firms and businesses.

“The organizers take special care to ensure that children receive things that they need, like school uniforms, and also things they want that make the holidays extra special,” said Cristina Lunders, Chair of the HYLF Board. “Adopt-An-Angel participants make a positive impact on their communities.”

Adopt-an-Angel Takes Care of Needs and Makes Children Smile

Edward Sanchez, the parent engagement representative of Burnet Elementary, has seen firsthand the impact the Adopt-An-Angel program has on the students: “97% of our students are economically disadvantaged. 70% of these students live in rental properties. It is because of these reasons that families go without gifts. Family income covers only necessities, ” Sanchez explained. “However, with help from HYLA, children can receive gifts for the holidays.”

Santa Visited Rucker Elementary

Santa visited Rucker Elementary and other schools and charities around Houston with Adopt-an-Angel to deliver gifts. The four chairpersons of Adopt-an-Angel proudly stand by bicycles that are ready to be given to their new owners.

“My favorite part is seeing the joy, gratitude and sometimes tears on the faces of parents when they pick up their children and gifts,” Sanchez said.

“We still see the benefits of our first delivery event from last year,” Burnet Principal Ana Cantu said. “In the end, it means so much to know many students stay because they know they are loved and cared for here at Burnet.”

Kathy Foster, director and founder of Casa de Esperanza, attests to the benefits of the program. She says they are especially relevant this year because of Hurricane Harvey. “There is nothing like seeing the magic of Christmas through the eyes of these children,” Ms. Foster said. “We are amazed by the Adopt-An-Angel program and the generosity of HYLA’s members who make it happen. When our children open their gifts Christmas morning, they also receive joy, hope and know their community loves them.”

Some of the Special Sponsors and Participants Who Make it Happen

The Adopt-An-Angel program depends on the generosity of the sponsoring law firms, attorneys, and businesses. Over the years, numerous firms have dedicated time, money, and energy to the Adopt-An-Angel program. Consequently, many Houston law firms and legal companies support the program year after year, including Kirkland & Ellis, LP, Norton Rose Fulbright US LLP, Vinson & Elkins, LLP, Gardere Wynne Sewell, LLP, King & Spalding, LLP, Baker Botts LLP, Winstead, and Shell.

The participating HISD schools include Bastian Elementary, Bellfort ECC Headstart, Burnet Elementary, DeChaumes Elementary, Petersen Elementary, and Rucker Elementary.

Casa De Esperanza, Catholic Charities, SEARCH’s House of Tine Treasures, Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, and Boys and Girls Harbor, Inc. are participating private charities.

How You Can Participate in Adopt-an-Angel

Adopt-An-Angel began 10 years ago as a mission of the Houston legal community to give back. “HYLA’s mission is to help our members learn, lead, network, and serve our profession and community,” said Lauren Brogdon, president of the HYLA Board. “As a result of the tragic events this year, it has never been more important for young lawyers to serve the city of Houston and its most vulnerable residents.”

If you would like to contribute to the Adopt-An-Angel program, please send an email to Adopt-an-Angel.

World Champs

World Champs , the Houston Astros, brought a flood-weary and storm damaged Houston together with a real sense of team spirit during the Major League Baseball playoffs as this mural and many others around the city memorialize.

World champs — it’s an amazing accomplishment for any city but for Houston the timing could not have been better. If we learned anything this past season from the Houston Astros (and we learned a lot), two things stand out from an esoteric standpoint — we can achieve amazing things against great odds when we have the right team members and work together! So congratulations and thank you Astros and everyone in Houston for our first World Series win in 56 years! What an amazing experience!

This same lesson applies in business.  What a difference it makes having the right individual players to launch your team from so-so to world champs! As the Houston Astros success shows, the right trades – and placements –  can make all the difference. Add seasoned experience to augment and lead your less experienced raw talent. Find an energetic leader with strong, consistent wisdom and methodology to set the pace.

You, too, Can Go from So-So to World Champs with the Right Team and an Effective Leader

Management is more than hiring all-stars; it involves hiring and building complementary players, and fostering an environment in which employees are motivated to challenge each other while supporting their efforts.  Where collaboration doesn’t mean always agreeing but rather respectfully discussing ideas and building on the expertise and strength of each participant. Businesses that stress a spirit of teamwork and collaboration, while valuing individual merit, are able to capitalize on the individual strengths of their employees. As most of us know, when effective teams are in place, the collective product can be greater than the sum of the individual effort.

Keeping teamwork going is also something that requires focus. Teams often start out strong — but then they tend to lose enthusiasm when clear direction, goals and governance are not in place. This is the critical role of the team manager and it is a balancing act. The team has to be empowered but with clear engaging direction and specific, time-oriented goals. The team manager must always maintain the appropriate level of authority and allow individuality within the group.

Effective managers do not assume the team knows how to be a team much less world champs. They train all teams in teamwork skills such as listening, communicating with different personality types, and focus. Training first and teaming later is never an effective approach. It is always best to train the team as a team, and it is a helpful bonding to experience.

When your team rhythm isn’t quite right, Manhattan Resources can help evaluate the coaches and players. We can help you identify gaps, and recommend solutions to help you build a team that can achieve your goals. And you just might have the next world champs in your industry.
